So when her career takes an unexpected detour, and her boyfriend—a high-powered art dealer with a taste for the finer things in life—decides to stage an ostentatious, career-making auction on a luxury liner to Antarctica, Olivia is thrilled. She also summited the highest mountain in the Americas, Aconcagua, in -45C and 90kmph winds, and has visited all seven continents.

With everything going preposterously wrong for Olivia right from the start, I kept waiting for the momentum to pick up - some break-away that would present me with the inclination to care about what was happening or become invested and intrigued about the cast of supporting characters that were alongside us on this journey.

Although terrified of the water, Olivia has been persuaded by her boyfriend to join him for a once in a lifetime cruise to Antarctica to help their new business. Olivia boards an Antarctic cruise with her art dealer boyfriend, Aaron, who has negotiated an exhibition for his most famous client on board the ship.

Still, most of Midnight feels like a series of isolated, if concerning, incidents - for some reason, the tension never really ratchets up as it should. This business opportunity with her boyfriend could really change things for Olivia and lift some burdens she has, but the only problem is that she has a fear of boats due to past history involving her late father.

As they set off on the cruise, people begin to die, and Olivia begins to wonder whether she might be next. The main draw of this book for me, other than having enjoyed Amy McCulloch's debut novel Breathless, was the setting in Antarctica - and that aspect certainly didn't disappoint.

Midnight is chillingly atmospheric, with sub-zero tension and a creeping plot that makes it impossible to look away . The main character has a water phobia and has recently experienced total burnout from all the stresses in her life she was ignoring.

But as the situation heats up and the temperatures continue to plummet, she begins to wonder whether she might have booked a one-way ticket to her own demise. She's carrying a heavy burden, one which she was able to shed through the difficult tasks she was confronted with, and I did appreciate how she applied her own nautical expertise to good use, while navigating the treacherous waters. As the story progressed, however, it became clear how it was integral to the action - it just took a while to get there. What pains me even more that it did start off with a very compelling pull - a big showcase auction so that guests could 'experience the phenomenon known as the “midnight sun” – a sun that never sets during the exact moment when it would happen - a moment so elusive that it would only illuminate the incredible feat that Olivia and her boyfriend had pushed the extra boundaries to bring this once in a lifetime opportunity for some of the world's most elusive and exclusive bidders. Combines an intricate murder mystery with lyrical passages describing ice cliffs and spectacular skies. Olivia is delighted to get an invitation to join an exclusive cruise to Antarctica with her art representative boyfriend Aaron. We have a growing occurrence of incidents that contribute to the sense of unease and we build to a tense and dramatic finale.
