Reviews Rd 7

Here are the rather late reviews of the Best Video, Video RU and Judges Choices.

Best Video (Best Editing, Character, Action, Narrative, Music Use RU)

 Headlights by BuffyAnn

The atmospheric song (which I had not heard before) you chose just consummately sets this dream/nightmarish mood for the Kara character study. The choral sound is dreamlike and we see her as if waking and then a pulsing beat kicks in with images of the symbol that haunt her throughout.  The first line of lyrics defines that sense that she is on a collision course with her 'destiny' and that final acceptance. The quick cutting and snippets of clips showing her distress & confusion heighten the portrayal of someone who is self destructive ,lost and cannot allow herself to be happy - even when faced with declaration of love.

I loved how you intercut scenes of the brutal boxing match through out the clips of battlescenes. And the sequence that begins with 'The Headlights' from 1.58 is breathtaking and had me transfixed, and it is as if Kara 'caught' in the headlights. A superb character study which has an true indefinable, spiritual quality, that makes it certainly special. A truly excellent vid.

Best Video RU & Judges Choice (Best Editing RU, Best Music Use, Best Narrative)

 The Other Side by Obsessive24

This was one of two vids that struck an real emotional chord in me this round. I loved the movement throughout this piece, which just flowed with such subtlety, every note and chord edited to perfection building such a sense of sorrow & quiet struggle . The fade to white enhanced the atmosphere of this and time toggled clips were very effective (you are so good at the time thing...)

There is a fantastic shift of pace at around 1.51 through to the scenes with Cameron, and some lyrical interpretations that caused a catch in the throat. I like how you used the parallels of the 'fathers', the use of religious imagery and very powerful to start and end on that scene (ok I'm in 'maternal' mode here - It's tough to switch off)

The character of Chase, to me,  is often eclipsed by the far more overpowering one of House - yet your portrayal of his story here - searching to understand love, faith and God, struggling with his doubts is beautifully told. Powerful, moving and beautiful.

Best Overview & Judges Choice

Devils & Dust by Jessie

Another powerful and emotional vid that just had to be noticed. This was an inspired choice of song and you had such excellent lyrical interpretation, to me it really felt like the essence of the first season of BSG, the struggle of both human and cylon, moments of pain, loss and then elation.

The power of your clip choices and clean editing was very effective - I liked theme of hands throughout - and sequence which begins with the harmonica at 1.56 just gives me chills (of the good kind) the ship powers in and Leoban (sp) is sucked out of the airlock. Just fantastic and worth rewatching over and over again. Both simultaneously  uplifting and tragic,  a wonderful overview of this great  show.
