There’s an aspect of personalisation to the VIDAA interface with app recommendations and a peak at what’s trending for those with Netflix accounts. VIDAA is also Chromecast-able for flinging content at the TV. Alexa is built in, so the TV can be controlled by your voice if you fancy a chat. What plagues the U8Q is motion. The Ultra Smooth Motion feature should be turned on, as terrestrial signals can be rather staccato without it, but the U8Q doesn’t handle motion with a huge degree of confidence.

The U8H uses an increasingly common TV design, in which a thin metallic band runs along the sides and across the top of the screen, while a wider, brushed metallic strip serves as the bottom bezel. It’s a simple, classy look that the Hisense U6H, the Vizio M50QXM-K01, and a variety of other TVs share. The bottom bezel sports a chrome Hisense logo in the middle, a trapezoidal protrusion for the infrared sensor, a power button, Google Assistant indicator lights, and a far-field microphone array complete with a mute switch. The TV stands on two long, thin metal feet and has standard VESA screw holes for wall mounting. The set’s overall design is pleasing and it comes with an adequate remote control and feet that can be adjusted to better accommodate a soundbar when placed on a TV stand. Hisense uses Google TV as the smart interface for the UH8, and it’s a mostly fine way to go, especially if you sign in as a Google user. This will allow you to tap Google Assistant for all sorts of smart home actions, and will also let you carry out basic functions and content searches using voice commands. It’s most evident during a stream of a Premier League match on Prime Video. The jerky nature of the image is never fully resolved regardless of which Ultra Smooth Motion mode is used, or whether the de-judder setting is customised. Smooth or Standard are your best bets, but the slight blur and jittery motion that still pervades is distracting. With the stand included the TV measures in at 1232 x 799 x 308mm (whd), or if you’re considering wall-mounting then the rear panel juts out at just 83mm of depth. It’s compatible with VESA wall-mounts, and at 17.4kg without a stand (18.9kg with one), it’s not too heavy. It's alsoan excellent TV forgaming due to its very goodmotion handling, so there's very little blur behind fast-moving objects. It has HDMI 2.1 bandwidth on two of its HDMI ports, meaning it can take full advantage of the Xbox Series X and PS5 consoles and even high-end PCs with up to 4k @ 144Hz support. Finally, it has low input lag and supports every variable refresh rate (VRR)technology, ensuring a responsive, nearly tear-free gaming experience. Watching a more familiar test disc for color, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2, the psychedelic palette of the scenes that take place on Ego’s home planet were rendered in a clean, yet fully saturated way. The few human faces revealed natural-looking skin tones, and the U8H’s combination of powerful brightness and well-modulated contrast could be appreciated in the overall dynamic and vibrant quality of images. Hisense uses a simple naming scheme. Starting with their 2021 TVs, the flagship ULED lineup has a U in front of the model names, while the entry-level models have an A. The first letter is followed by a number to indicate where it stands in the lineup; the last letter represents the year; Hisense uses G for 2021, H for 2022, and K for 2023. For example, the Hisense U8His a high-end 2022model, while the Hisense A6H is an entry-level 2022 model. If there's an R in the model code, it means it uses Roku TV instead of Android TV. The TV’s sturdy metal feet can be installed either closer in toward the screen’s center or extended further out to the sides. The latter option gives you ample space for soundbar placement, and the 3 inches of clearance between the TV’s bottom edge and the surface it’s placed upon means there's plenty of space for a soundbar. Used in a normal living room environment with good ambient lighting and watching directly onto the screen the image quality is good with natural colours and reasonable upscaling and motion. The image also measures accurately out of the box in the Filmmaker Mode. This depends on the remote controller, specific to each TV model. Please call the service centre on 0333 800 2200, who will be happy to provide you with the correct code. Materials” collectively means any Content, Submitted Content (where applicable and as further defined herein), messaging, blogging, chatting, social networking, information, advertising and/or internet links, etc., accessible or delivered through the Device. Gaming is also well catered for with two HDMI 2.1 inputs compatible with 4K/120, VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) and ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode). You’re not fussed by having lots of streaming apps: The U8Q focuses on the few rather than having many, and that will suit those who just need Netflix and the UK catch-up apps. Dolby Vision IQ and HDR10+ Adaptive HDR support, along with HDMI 2.1 features like 4K/120Hz, VRR, and ALLM.

A Worthy Successor and an Excellent Value

The U8H’s coverage of DCI-P3, the color gamut used for mastering movies for digital cinema and 4K Blu-ray disc, was 97% when measured using Portrait Displays’ Calman color calibration software. And while we’ve logged higher coverage on sets like Sony’s A80K OLED, the Hisense’s performance here is impressive for budget TV. Otherwise, it has features you don't normally find on TVs at this price range. It has VRR support, although over the narrow 48-60Hz range. It doesn't support HDR10+ like the more expensive models, but it does have Dolby Vision, which is more widespread. It doesn't support advanced DTS audio formats, but it does support DTS 5.1 over ARC. It has good response time and superbly low input lag, so it's a decent gaming TV overall. Ultimately, this is the best cheap TV on the market, and it's almost as good as the more expensive U6K. A total of four HDMI inputs are provided, with two offering HDMI 2.1 features such as 4K/120Hz support, variable refresh rate (VRR), and auto low latency mode (ALLM). Other gamer-friendly features include Freesync Premium Pro, and there’s also HDMI eARC support.

Subtitles and audio description information displayed on electronic programme guide programme banner Filmmaker Mode (FMM) is accurate out of the box on the Hisense U8H and that is what we had hoped for, given very few users will ever pay for a full calibration at this price point HDR on the Hisense U8H has over 1400 nits in the most accurate picture mode, although haloing and blooming are issues within certain scenes and become distracting at times, with blooming suppression hindering small highlight areas by making them darker to try and mitigate haloing around them. In the Standard mode the speaker’s delivery is deliberately flat. I think it works well. Vocals are prioritised and it’s easy to understand what’s being said. It’s not particularly wide or tall, but the Theatre option is there for a more expansive presentation. Vocals, however, are less emphasised. While some of the controls didn’t work thanks to a bug in this sample of the TV, we were still able to get accurately calibrated images from the Hisense U8QF, but it wasn’t as accurate out of the box or as easy to calibrate as the previously reviewed U7QF. We are reviewing the 55-inch version of the Hisense U8HQ but it shares roughly the same panel and features as the 65- and 75-inch versions, so image quality shouldn’t be that different across the screen sizes, but there will be panel variance to take account of.
